It never tries to re-landscape the genre. Of course, one can't judge Torchlight 2 too harshly on this count. Maybe I'm spoiled by the Dark Souls of the world, but I really can't help but think the entire action genre (including, but not limited to RPGs) has placed far too much focus on offense and neglected entirely defense outside of items that buff your character's defensive stats. As much fun as I have customizing my character with better and more interesting loot, I still find the game lacks what most games in this genre lack: a real focus on defense. Soon there will be a host of mods to make the replay value even greater.Īnd yet, however much fun I've had with Torchlight 2, I think it still appeals to a different demographic. After finishing the game you can start right into some co-op play at the higher levels, or head over to the Mapworks and loot to your hearts content. ![]() What makes Torchlight 2 so great is the replay value. This is actually a very clever way to make the replay of the game a worthwhile endeavor. ![]() I used an axe that did very little damage for a long time simply because it dropped meteors.Īt the top of the pyramid are Unique Set items, which are the rarest of all, and which have the best enchantments, especially if you can find two or more pieces.Īt the end of the game, you get to choose a Unique Set item, and I suspect that at the end of each playthrough you'll be able to choose yet another item in that set, until you complete it. Some of these will drop acid rain or meteors on unsuspecting hordes. Then there's Unique items, which almost always have the best enchantments. Rare items tend to be better, and if you find Rare Set pieces you can make them even more powerful by equipping two or more pieces of the Set. There's also pre-Enchanted weapons which can be fairly powerful. There are vanilla items which are only valuable if they have sockets and you enchant them and embed gems in them until they're decent. In Torchlight 2 there are several types of items. You can continue to level your character and find new and better items. In NG+ you start out with harder enemies, more promising loot, and the same story. ![]() I finished Torchlight II at level 49, and proceeded to play some Mapworks areas until I'd gained a couple more levels before starting New Game Plus.
